Plenty going on at Ballarat this arvo, eight races and a tip in every one. Track’s a Heavy 8 with the cloud sitting over it, so the going matters more than usual today. Big Rooster in the 5 from gate 2 is where we’re keenest, and the $3.80 looks fair for a horse with the map. There’s a few longer ones worth a look too once you get past the maidens.

The fav at $2.80 comes from gate 2 but still has to lift off midfield, same shape, half the price. Gate 9 is the knock, but Stackhouse will roll forward and find cover. $5.50, I’m on him.

Same money as the favourite and I get a stable in form? Yes please. #7 Gina’s A Star is $3.90 with Dean Yendall up for Mitchell Freedman. She ran fourth last start off a let-up and has the late kick to make use of the soft tempo. Gate 9 is the knock, but $4 on Perlage from the rail doesn’t tempt me at the same money. Take her.

$1.65 for #2 Dreck off back-to-back placings is short enough for me. #6 Wolfoffitroystreet has been knocking on the door with three thirds and a second from his last four, draws gate 2, Bates rides for Maher. The fav settles in the same midfield spot from a worse gate, and on a Heavy 8 I want the inside draw. $3.90, easy.

Gate 3 in a no-leader race is exactly where I want to be. #2 Danzsin gets the midfield trip from the inside while #8 Our Wynd Chymes does all the work from gate 8. Ear muffs on first time, came back off the spell with a win, and Dabernig has him ready. I’d rather have $6.50 on Danzsin than $2.90 on the fav doing the same job from a worse gate. Give me Danzsin.
