Where’s the value at Ballarat today? Not in the short ones, we reckon. The track is a Good 3 with showers about, so it should stay racing on top for now, but keep an eye on the sky. We went through the eight races and came out with four we’re keen on. A couple of those sit at nice prices, with Vianarra out to $8 in the 6 and Vega Blues at $10 in the last. No standout to build the day around, just four worth a look where the money reads better than the market thinks.

Genuine speed up top is exactly what I want for a horse that gets back. #3 Frosted Miss draws the rail, gets the cross-over nose band on, and can save ground before running over the top of them late. Australian Legacy has to do all the work in front at $2.90 with real pace on. I’d rather take $4.50 on the one getting the soft run behind them.

Blinkers go on for the first time and that’s the hook for me. #14 Justibella ran second last start for Maher, John Allen stays on, and the new gear should sharpen her up to run over the top of them late. At $4.60 I’m on her ahead of the $3.20 fav.

The favourite Zorro’s Flight settles near the back in a race with no genuine leader, and I’m not paying $4.40 for that. #6 Vianarra can roll forward and make his own luck out front while they all look for cover. Craig Newitt sticks. Give me the $8 on the one controlling it.

$10 for #4 Vega Blues is a fat price when the favourite sits just as far back for a fraction of it. Scoobartie settles near the tail at $2.30, so I’m not paying that for the same job from a worse gate. Vega Blues draws the rail, Jye McNeil’s aboard for the Kavanaghs, and first-up he can land closer and pick them off late. On at the tens.
