History of the Caulfield Cup

Established in 1879, the Caulfield Cup is a prestigious Australian horse race that has gained both local and international recognition and serves as a crucial event leading up to the renowned Melbourne Cup and forms a significant part of Australia’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Over the years, the Caulfield Cup has transformed into a global racing event, attracting top-tier talent from around the world, and is essential in the Australian horse racing calendar, enthralling racing enthusiasts worldwide with the prize money now at a significant $5 million.

Unfortunately, the 2020 Caulfield Cup marked a unique chapter in the history of Australian Thoroughbred racing, as the global coronavirus pandemic led to a significant reduction in spectators, this situation was somewhat reminiscent of World War II when it was moved to Flemington as the military occupied Caulfield.

From Humble Beginnings to a Global Event

A unique benefit for the winner is free entry to the Melbourne Cup due to being granted a ballot exemption.

From 1879 to 1971 the Caulfield Cup was 1-1/2 miles long, however once the metric system was introduced the Caulfield Cup has remained 2400 metres. The feature race of the day (Carlton Draught Caulfield Cup) is classified as a Group 1 race in the first year of the Group grading system.

Notably, the Cup has had its share of rare occurrences. In the race’s almost 120-year history, just two horses, Poseidon (1906, 1907) and Rising Fast (1954, 1955), have won two consecutive Caulfield Cups, and no horse has won the race more than twice, additionally, there has only been one dead heat in the Cup’s history, which occurred in 1909 between Blue Book and Aborigine. Sainfoin (1893) and Big Philou (1969) were declared winners following a protest.
