Ballarat Races

The Ballarat Turf Club is one of the main racetracks in provincial Victoria, staging over 32 race meetings during the racing season, the most on any grass circuit in regional Victoria.

The Track

Ballarat Racecourse has both an old and modern track, and the Race Club can accommodate 300 horses in training. The field has a capacity of 18 runners, a course radius of 1900 metres, a track width of 30 metres, and a home straight of 450 metres. Inside barriers can be advantageous for distances ranging from 1,400 to 2,200 metres.

The track has excellent drainage and is suitable for racing in wet conditions. All surfaces are well-grassed, watered, and built on clay soils.

A Synthetic Track

Due to its central location, proximity to a more significant percentage of the state’s racehorse population, significant local training numbers, and improvements in track shape and size over the incumbent track at Geelong, Ballarat was chosen as one of three racecourses to have a synthetic racetrack.

What does the installation of a new synthetic racetrack imply for Ballarat trainers?

Before the opening of the synthetic track at Sportsbet-Ballarat, the old facilities were nearly full. The synthetic track allows for more training and racing options, allowing existing trainers to expand their stable size while creating opportunities for more trainers to relocate to Ballarat.

 

The Tracks History

The Ballarat Turf Club, founded in 1854, is rich in history.

Ballarat Racecourse has been at its current location in Dowling Forest since 1972 and is one of Victoria’s premier thoroughbred training facilities. Dowling Forest Racecourse is another name for the racecourse.

Dowling Forest is located on 300 hectares of land in Miners Rest, 15 km northwest of Ballarat’s core business district.

The Ballarat Cup, the final feature race of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival, is held at the Ballarat Racecourse in November.
