Port Adelaide vs GWS Prediction

Michael Kruse
Updated 3 August 2026

Port Adelaide are favourites in front of their own fans and I think that is the mistake. Greater Western Sydney arrive in a must win spot, they win the football where it matters, and the value at Adelaide Oval sits squarely with the visitors.

Port Adelaide Are Favourites At Home And I Think They Are The Wrong Way Around. Greater Western Sydney Win The Contest, And That Is How The Visitors Get The Job Done.

Two flawed sides, one must win game for the Giants, and a market that has talked itself into the home team.

I’ve landed on the visitors, and the case builds in a few places.

The Giants win the hard ball

This game turns on the contest, and that is where GWS live. They win more of the hard ball and shift it on by hand quicker than Port do, and that supply is what lets a team dictate the run home rather than chase it. Against a Port outfit that keeps getting run over late, control at the coalface is close to the whole ballgame.

Briggs back answers Port’s ruck

The one box Port tick is the ruck, where they get first hands at the stoppage. But Kieren Briggs slots back in for the Giants after a leg complaint, and with him packing down that tap advantage shrinks in a hurry. Winning the hit outs counts for little when the other side keeps winning the ball at ground level.

The case for Port, and the one thing that beats it

Here is the honest part. Port are favourites at home for a reason, and a big Oval crowd is a real edge. Lose Finn Callaghan out of the midfield and the Giants are not at full strength either. But Port keep running out of legs after half time, and that is exactly when the visitors’ contested game tells. I will take the side that finishes.

Why the points stay down

Neither side wants a shootout. GWS would rather grind it out than trade goals, and the pressure they bring in their forward half chokes ball movement and kills the tempo. That is an unders game, and I have it in play.

Port Adelaide vs GWS Tip

I’m tipping Greater Western Sydney to win outright at Adelaide Oval. They win the contest, and Port have dropped three straight, beaten by 28 by Fremantle and 59 by Brisbane, which is exactly the slide the Giants punish.

Port Adelaide vs GWS Key Stats

HANDBALLS
PTA123

GWS178

When GWS win it and move it on by hand, Port spend the night chasing instead of scoring, and a home side stuck chasing is a home side that stops finding the goals.
HIT OUTS
PTA40

GWS34

Port’s one clear edge, but first hands at the ruck count for little when the other side wins the ball at ground level, and Briggs’ return blunts even this.
TACKLES INSIDE 50

GWS12

The Giants hunt hard in their forward half, and that pressure forces the turnovers that keep this a low scoring night.

Michael’s Verdict

Port at home is the comfortable bet and that is the trap. Back the side that finishes over the side that fades, and take the unders with it.

Player Prop Predictions

Mitch Zadow to kick a goal, $1.60. A goal in two of his last four, and one of those was a three goal haul, so the upside’s there at $1.60 even in a Port side I’ve got getting run over after the main break.

Miles Bergman 20 or more disposals, $1.66. Twenty on the dot last start, and he’s cleared this line in two of his last four. At $1.66 the disposals keep coming whichever way the contest tips.

Harry Rowston to kick a goal, $2.20. I’ve got the Giants winning the contest, and Rowston’s found the goals in two of his last four. Getting a goal from a side I fancy at $2.20 is the play.

Corey Durdin two or more goals, $2.00. Two or more in four of his last seven, a three goal game sitting in that run to show the ceiling. At even money on a genuine goalkicker I’ll take it.

Mitch Georgiades two or more goals, $1.31. Two last start and multiple goals in four of his last seven, back to back three goal games through that patch. At $1.31 he’s the steady anchor the whole multi hangs off.
