Melbourne vs Carlton Prediction
Carlton are favourite and I’m not going to argue with…

Melbourne need this to stay out of the wildcard round and I have them getting there. Handing the Western Bulldogs 16.5 points to do it is another thing entirely. The winner and the margin are two very different bets at the MCG on Saturday.

Melbourne have the better week riding on this and the better side down the middle. That gets them home.
It does not get them home by three goals. Everything about this fixture says close, and the handicap is priced like it is going to be anything but.
A Melbourne win keeps them out of the wildcard round and buys them a bye, and their coach has said as much publicly. That is a concrete reason to be at your best.
The Western Bulldogs are already into a wildcard final either way. What they are playing for is where it gets played, because a win can lift them to eighth and a loss can drop them to tenth and an interstate trip. Real, but not the same size.
Max Gawn is named, and that is the one line off the team sheet that decides how I bet this. My case is Melbourne winning the contest and it does not survive without him.
Hit outs on their own are the softest stat in footy and I am not going to sell you a tap as a clearance. Where it actually shows up is the contested mark. Melbourne can go long and win it in the air and the Western Bulldogs cannot, and that is how you hold a tight game in your half without needing it to open up. That is a six point win, not a three goal one.
Three straight to the Western Bulldogs, and the most recent of them was by three points in Round 11 this year. Two of the three were decided by a goal or less. That is not a side that gets beaten off the park at the MCG.
A 16.5 point handicap prices this like a mismatch, and two of the last three say otherwise. That is where the value is as far as I am concerned.
Marcus Bontempelli returns after being rested against Carlton, and Bailey Dale and Ryan Gardner come back in with him. Tom Liberatore is out.
The Western Bulldogs were good enough to draw with Carlton without their skipper. With him back they are a different proposition to the one the line seems to be pricing, and that is the single biggest reason I want the points.
I am tipping the side that has not won this fixture in three attempts, and I know how that reads. Fair thing to hold against me.
What is different is form and stakes. Melbourne come in having won three straight while the Western Bulldogs have won once in their last four, and only one of these two gets a week off out of the result.
The way back in for the Dogs is the same way they keep making these games close. They spoil, they smother and they do the unglamorous work at a rate Melbourne do not, and that sort of game does not hand out big margins to anyone. Which is exactly why I want the win and the points, not the win on its own.
I’m tipping Melbourne by a goal, around 90 to 84, but the Western Bulldogs are far too good a side to be giving 16.5 points to.
Melbourne to win, the Western Bulldogs to cover. A goal either side of six points is my read on this, and a game like that never gets near the total. Take the 16.5 and take the unders with it.
Bayley Fritsch three or more goals, $2.70. Bayley Fritsch banged on four last start and he had five in this same run of six, so the big return is well within him. Three or more in three of his last six, and I have Melbourne winning with 90 on the board to feed him.
Caleb Windsor to kick a goal, $2.10. Caleb Windsor got his name on the sheet again last start and that is three of his last six with a goal. In a Melbourne win the scoring gets spread around, and $2.10 for a bloke who keeps finding one is fair value.
Marcus Bontempelli 25 or more disposals, $1.66. Marcus Bontempelli racked up 25 last start and his floor across the six is 19, so he is never far away. He has had 25 or more in three of his last six, and the Western Bulldogs are good enough here that this stays a genuine contest with him in the thick of it.
Kysaiah Pickett to kick a goal, $1.17. Kysaiah Pickett has hit the scoreboard in four of his last seven, including a double the game before last. Melbourne are my tip and I have them kicking 90, so the chances will come and $1.17 is a steady leg.
Matthew Jefferson to kick a goal, $1.31. Matthew Jefferson snagged three last start, and he has a four in this seven game run as well, so the ceiling is real. A goal in four of his last seven and he is on the right side of the result at $1.31.

| Our Tip | Multi: Western Bulldogs +16.5, Under 184.5 points & Kysaiah Pickett Anytime Goal @ $4.13 |
| Predicted Score | Melbourne Demons 90 – Western Bulldogs 84 |
I’m tipping Melbourne by about six points at the MCG, call it 90 to 84. Max Gawn is named, they win the ball in the air, and a win keeps them out of the wildcard round. It should be tight rather than comfortable.
My headline multi at $4.13 rolls the line and total in with a player prop, Kysaiah Pickett Anytime Goal. On its own, Western Bulldogs +16.5 at $1.91 is the anchor.
At the MCG, with the first bounce at 4:15pm AEST on Saturday 22 August 2026. It is the last home and away game of the season for both clubs.
Melbourne have the week off if they hold a top six spot after Round 24. If they slip out of the six they play a wildcard final in the wildcard round that follows Round 24, with times to be confirmed.
The Bulldogs play a wildcard final in the wildcard round that follows Round 24, with times to be confirmed. Whether they host or travel depends on whether they finish eighth, ninth or tenth after Round 24.
